Movember 2013 – the last day

Dave Movember 2We’re finally into December, so we’re all slightly glad to be coming in clean shaven this morning. A month with an increasingly itchy lip warmer wasn’t pleasant but it was for a good cause.

Movember, the testicular and prostate cancer awareness charity, is an important cause and the team here has raised £620 for putting up with the fuzz. If you haven’t donated and would like to then you can do so via our team page.

We’ve also given an extra £150 to Movember for the best moustache at […]

Using 60 GHz for 4G LTE backhaul: Whitepaper

The past couple of months have seen interesting moves from the FCC regarding LTE backhaul and the 60GHz band.

See also our backhaul pages for a background information source.

The US wireless communications regulator has revised its Part 15 regulations, which govern the unlicensed spectrum, to increase the permissible power (from +40 dBmi up to a maximum of +82 dBmi with +51 dBi gain antennas) for these 7GHzs of bandwidth (57-64GHz) when used in outdoor operations with narrow antenna beams (<0.4 degrees).

So, while 802.11ad 60GHz (WiGig) operations haven’t been affected, the FCC says the range of LTE backhaul transmissions will be […]

Movember at the NMI

Movember 2

The NMI Awards took place last Thursday and, as per last year, the NMI asked all those hirsute attendees raising funds for Movember to get on stage. This year, however, there was a sponsor… namely, us.

For those not aware, Movember seeks to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer and does this by encouraging people to grow moustaches through the month of November.

Armed with a small, comedy trophy, a promise of payment, and a very helpful judge (ARM’s VP of corporate HR services, Kirsty Gill) we assembled 15 men on stage […]

Movember Week 3

It’s now three weeks into Movember and the lip warmers are coming along nicely. The team has raised a collective total of £325 for the Movember testicular and prostate cancer awareness charity and we’re hoping to increase this significantly by the end of the month.

This being charity we’ll ask outright for your help and support for this very worthwhile charity. You can donate at our team page or our individual pages (see our team pages).

Blu Wireless sponsors NMI Awards’ Movember

Blu Wireless has agreed to sponsor Movember at the NMI Awards.

Movember is a charity to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer, something close to our hearts. In addition to growing our own lip warmers to raise funds, we will be making a charitable donation to the owner of the best moustache, choosing from all attending this year’s awards.

We will also raise this donation if Derek Boyd, CEO of the NMI, the Awards’ host and one of the industry’s most famously hirsute individuals agrees to shave off his moustache at the awards.

The ceremony takes place on the 21st and we’ll […]

Blog: WiGig market hotting up for 2014 growth

The new WiGig certified logo, also announced this month

Good to see recent developments occurring from the Wi-Fi alliance surrounding WiGig (aka 802.11ad). One of the big challenges for any new technology is making sure it works with everything that’s out there so it’s not a hassle to integrate.

As the WiGig Alliance became part of the WiFi alliance in January, the handover between the two wireless standards will be well managed. The next challenge will be wired standards, (particularly USB), and display (HDMI).

So it was good to see the […]

Blog: WiGig for video transfer, what the analysts think

There’s an interesting stat from ABI stating more than half of mobile devices will be able to connect to external displays in 2018.

The analyst firm says that hundreds of millions of devices (smartphones / tablets / PCs / projectors) have this functionality now but this is set to increase to 2.1 billion smartphones and tables by 2018. And 60GHz wireless technology (aka WiGig / 802.11ad) will play a key role in enabling this.

ABI’s press announcement stated “The capabilities of the display and availability of adapters between the mobile device and display will remain the gating factor for years […]
