Should EU 60GHz regulations mirror the US?

There are significant variations between the EU and the US when it comes to the 60GHz band – and the rest of the world, for that matter.

One of the most visible difference is the channel’s boundaries, with the US, Canada and Korea all running it between 57 and 64GHz to give seven GHz of bandwidth. Japan similarly delivers 7 GHz of bandwidth, but uses 59 – 66 GHz. China uses a 5GHz band from 59 – 64 GHz. And the EU delivers 9 GHz of bandwidth, from 57 to 66 GHz.

These are subtle variations, but demand that chips will require […]

Gigabit wireless firm Blu Wireless awarded £1m from the West of England Growth Fund

One of Bristol’s leading high tech companies has been awarded £1 million from the West of England’s Growth Fund to accelerate development and marketing of its gigabit wireless technology.

Blu Wireless Technology (BWT) is a silicon intellectual property (IP) company developing low cost, gigabit wireless communications technology.  The initial markets for BWT’s technology include the emerging 60GHz ‘WiGig’ addition to the WiFi family, which will enable large video files to be transferred onto mobile phones at up to 7Gbps – 20 times faster than existing WiFi; as well as the creation of high-speed wireless links for the latest 4G mobile networks […]

Blu Wireless joins NMI

Last year was a very significant one for Blu Wireless. We gained significant funding for our 60GHz baseband IP for WiGig and backhaul applications, formed a strategic advisory board consisting of Sir Robin Saxby, Glenn Collinson and Andy Nix, took on several new staff – indeed we’re still growing at a rate of 1-2 per month – and made several important partnerships, including Imagination, InterDigital and Cadence.

We’ve therefore made the decision to become a fully paid up member of  NMI, the UK’s trade body for electronic systems and microelectronics.

5G mobile networks and the use of mm wave technologies

CES is over, and WiGig / 60GHz technologies in general were heavily featured at the show. But, interestingly, there are also several stories coming in that look at 5G mobile technologies.

From ourselves, we announced a partnership with InterDigital to explore millimetre wave solutions for small cell base stations and access points. We’re also in discussion to extend the collaboration and are looking to create a demonstration platform that will enable operators to evaluate this technology to more cost effectively increase 4G and 5G backhaul throughput.

This platform would also be ideally suited to R&D exploration for 5G millimetre wave mobile […]

Using WiGig to enable PushVoD: White paper

The rise of the smartphone and tablet PC has driven an exponential growth in mobile video consumption and, even if further massive investments in 3G and 4G LTE network infrastructure take place it will not been enough to keep pace with this desire for uninterrupted access to the internet and other video content.

Mobile operators (MNOs) therefore need to find a way to manage this traffic to deliver this video without causing excessive customer churn or undertaking excessive spending on infrastructure. Additionally, to maximise profits from their networks they need to have control of the video’s digital rights. The alternative is to […]

Blu Wireless partners with Cadence to offer a complete set of IP for WiGig and 4G backhaul markets

60GHz wireless baseband system IP specialist, Blu Wireless Technology (BWT) is to partner with Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (CDNS), a leader in global electronic design innovation. The aim is to advance and promote a complete set of design IP required for their customers to develop low-power solutions for the emerging 60GHz WiGig and 4G backhaul market sectors with minimal risk and fast time to market on advanced process nodes.

InterDigital and Blu Wireless advance millimetre wave technology for backhaul between small-cell base stations

InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a wireless research and development company, and Blu Wireless Technology, a specialist in multi-gigabit wireless baseband system IP, today announced the successful completion of a first phase of collaborative development  to explore millimetre wave solutions for small cell base stations and access points. The companies are currently in discussion to extend the collaboration.

CES 2014

2013 is winding down, but it is feeling busier than ever.

It’s been a good year with significant funding coming in and a technical advisory board being put in place that includes Glenn Collinson (CSR’s co-founder), Robin Saxby (ARM’s founding CEO) and Professor Andy Nix (Bristol University’s wireless standards expert). We’ve also developed strong partnerships – such as the one we announced recently with Imagination Technologies.

So, onto 2014 and there will be very little time to let the leftover turkey and mince pies settle before flying off to Las Vegas for CES, which begins on the 7th January.

We […]

Blu Wireless combines Imagination’s MIPS Aptiv CPUs in groundbreaking 60GHz System IP for WiGig and backhaul markets

Unique heterogeneous processing architecture provides highly efficient baseband processing

Imagination Technologies (IMG.L) and Blu Wireless Technology (BWT) are sharing details of Blu Wireless’s new HYDRA baseband technology for efficient multi-gigabit wireless processing. The ground-breaking technology leverages multiple MIPS Aptiv processors together with HYDRA vector DSP technology in a unique heterogeneous multiprocessing architecture targeting the burgeoning 60GHz space.

The 60GHz market is being driven by consumer demand for HD video ‘anywhere, anytime’ via smartphones, laptops and tablets. 802.11ad Wi-Fi (also called WiGig), which uses the 60GHz band, is now hitting the market and is capable […]

60GHz WiGig and tri-band Wifi chipset growth to 2018

We’re fast approaching the end of 2013 and that means CES is just around the corner, and if initial reports are accurate, WiGig is set to play a starring role at this year’s event. Indeed, WiGig products have been in development throughout 2013 from several companies so we can expect great things.

For example, I recently referenced that Panasonic recently demonstrated WiGig enabled tablets and TVs at the Intel Developers Forum, with the consumer-tech blog, Pocket-Lint reporting real world speeds of over 1Gbit/sec in its hands on tests. Furthermore, the market seems to understand its application, with the same Pocket Lint report […]
